New adventure on Radio 4 - Frozen In Time!

How cool is Radio 4? Not only have they got an adaptation of Dr No coming up to celebrate the centenary of Ian Fleming, they are also branching out into sci fi. Later this year the popular Torchwood will undertake an audio adventure at CERN and Douglas Adams post Hitch-Hikers character Dirk Gently will return for two further tales.
But up first and how fantastic is this...

BRAND NEW
JOURNEY INTO SPACE!

From the typewriter of Charles Chilton comes "Frozen In Time" a brand new adventure for Jet and the crew. Is it a one off or could it be the first of several one-off plays?

Things have changed since 1958. Or was it 1981? David Jacobs is now star of the show, playing Jet Morgan, and the score has been composed by David Chilton - son of Charles Chilton - it's been performed on a synthesiser but it still sounds orchestral. The cast includes Alan Marriott - a relation perhaps of Anthony Marriott, the original Whitaker.

This is exciting news for all fans of radio's greatest adventure. The story continues at last! There have been at least two trailers on Radio 4 in the build up.

"Journey Into Space: Frozen In Time" will be broadcast as the Saturday Play on Saturday 12th April on Radio 4. It will be available to listen to online for up to seven days afterwards via the Radio 4 website www.bbc.co.uk/radio4

Even if you heard the show already click on the Listen Again to give it a hit. The more hits it gets the more likely the BBC will consider making future programs of this sort. Let's see if we can make Journey Into Space more popular than Chris Moyles!

Paul Donovan writes about growing up listening to Jet's adventures on the wireless and previews the new adventure (W A R N I N G    S P O I L E R S !). He is a big fan of Journey Into Space, a radio critic and author of The Radio Companion.

There is a two page article in this week's Radio Times previewing the new special.
"The thing is that David is the only surviving member of the original cast. The writer Charles Chilton is going strong at 91 - he's still working and still has a handshake that can crush a walnut" says new producer Nicholas Russell-Pavier.

Journey Into Space - Talking Book of the first novel available on CD in May 2008

Journey Into Space - The Novel of The Record Breaking Radio Serial - Talking Book read by William Hope

"Destination - the Moon!"

BBC Audiobooks are going to release a talking book of the first Journey Into Space novel. It is a complete and unabridged reading read by William Hope - an American actor who featured in Aliens.

The book has been out of print for many years and copies are hard to find. Hopefully if this goes well, all three novelisations will be made into talking books.

It is released on 8 May 2008. There are six CDs with a total running time of approximately 7 hours.

The cover replicates the artwork from the 1958 PAN paperback.

On the back:

Journey Into Space - Charles Chilton

The Novel of the First Record-Breaking Radio Serial

William Hope reads the complete and unabridged novelisation of Charles Chilton's hugely successful radio series, Journey into Space.

Destination - the Moon! No other adventurers had ever faced greater hazards than the crew of the rocket-ship Luna when she hurtled into space. Jet Morgan, ace pilot, was her captain. With him were her Australian designer, Mitch; Lemmy, the Cockney radio operator; and Doc, whose diary astonished everyone...

Charles Chilton's classic science fiction radio serial stormed the BBC airwaves between 1953 and 1958. With it's gripping storylines and tense cliff-hangers, it kept a devoted audience of almost eight million people enthralled during it's three series. So popular were the radio serials that Chilton was inspired to write a trilogy of bestselling novels featuring Captain Jet Morgan and his crew. First published in 1954, this thrilling first story is read by Aliens star William Hope, and tells how the Luna's adventures began.

Charles Chilton featured on BBC Four 'Curse of Comedy' Documentary

As part of "The Curse of Comedy" season on BBC Four (March 2008) there was a programme entitled "Auntie's War on Smut". This looked back at the rules of comedy in the BBC, particularly during the golden age of comedy, when the 'Green Book' was issued to producers. Created by Charles Chilton's boss Michael Standing this was a code of ethics for comedy - the rulebook for Light Entertainment. Chilton was interviewed and on top form recounting mishaps from the past as well as talking about The Goon Show. This follows on from the History Of Light Entertainment broadcast a few years back on BBC2, where Chilton appeared in episode 3, which focused on radio comedy.
