The men were not sorry when the time to return to Earth came round, but when they attempted to take off, neither the rocket motor nor anything else in the ship would function.
This episode is the memorable "in the dark" episode. It came about because by this point in it's run Journey Into Space was doing well in the ratings. Very well. Five million listeners were tuning in each week! A television producer approached Charles Chilton and said "When are you going to do Journey Into Space on television?" Chilton pointed out that it couldn't be done on television and the TV producer replied that the new medium could do anything radio could do. So Chilton went off and wrote the one thing television could never do - an episode in the dark! (Well mostly in the dark!) The gripping narrative with the four men trapped in the ship and running out of air was enhanced by Doc's diary entries depicting the change in the crew's disposition. The technique would be repeated again in episode 8 of The World In Peril and episode 3 of Space Force.
