Facts

  • Deryck Guyler gets a special credit at the end of this episode "The voice of the Time Traveller was played by Deryck Guyler". This is a rare occurence, usually only the four main stars are credited with the characters they play. Guyler had given a strong performance and was rewarded with his own credit. Incidentally his character was referred to as "The Voice" in the script and by the crew on many occasions.

  • In the Falkland Islands the series proved to be a hit. George Boothe, Director of Broadcasting, wrote back to London saying: "The two transcription series of Journey Into Space have both been fantastically popular here. We broadcast the series on Monday evenings and nobody would dare organise an event to coincide with that half hour. Even the local defence force have had to change their drill night."

Did it really happen?

Ironically, 1958 was not only the year that marked the end of Journey Into Space (in it's 50s incarnation) but also it was the year the controversial Van Allen belts were discovered, a lethal belt of radiation surrounding the Earth 1000 miles above it's surface.

So how did the crew of Luna manage to reach the Moon in 1965? How did they survive from being microwaved on the Moon in such flimsy space-suits, considering the high levels of radiation that bombard the its surface? And why has Stephen Mitchell, the first man on the Moon, only given two interviews in his life - including the time he said, "The others might think they were kidnapped by aliens and taken back to pre-historic Earth, but I couldn't possibly comment."
